Praise

Lisa A. Moore's prose is excellent; she's a master storyteller. You can hear the angry waves crash onto the rocks and the winds scream, the ocean itself echoing the fury building within Morwenna. Ancient foes are set to clash, and stories that appear to be science fiction and mythical become something bigger and stranger. You feel the tension build up from within. The magnetism of the conflict unfolding offshore wraps itself around you like the sealskin around Morwenna—it did for me. The characters are fantastic. They burn with angst and fierce determination. I couldn't wait to see Morwenna's undiluted Selkie power come to full bloom against Lucien's all-consuming dark magic and I was not disappointed. The story thrives on high-stakes worldbuilding. Even deeper, it expands into self-discovery, survival, love, family, and what it truly means to be friends. Whispers of the Selkie is ideal for fans of adventure, adrenaline-packed action, magic, and excitement steeped in mythology. It's unputdownable—I loved it!

The immersive writing style got me hooked from the first page as Moore excels in crafting vivid descriptions that establish a unique atmosphere and serve as storytelling and characterization tools. For example, magical phenomena act as extensions of the characters' personalities and mental states, allowing them to (consciously or not) express themselves beyond words and body language. The protagonists have great chemistry, and their interactions never get boring, especially given the sarcastic banter between Amara and Rhys. Overall, The Bet in Nocturne Alley is a short but delightful read that should appeal to most fantasy fans, especially those who love atmospheric storytelling, psychological exploration, and witty dialogue.

Underneath everything on the surface of the story, Lisa A. Moore waits in the shadows, ready to pounce on her readers when they think they have the plot untangled. Her characters' strained connections make it difficult to see the full scope of the plot until the climax and keep readers hastily turning pages as they try to unmask the villain behind the curses that may not be as separate as they seem. Throughout the story, Moore's layered characters grow through their bonds and evolve in their dire circumstances, bringing more depth to the narrative. Understanding each person's past and motives is critical, but Moore withholds just the right amount of information until the last chapters. Readers who enjoy magical mysteries will love The Bet in Nocturne Alley.
